Design of steel and timbers structures is a course tailored for students to understand the design of steel and timber structures. Steel and timbers are frequently used as structural elements, and hence proper understanding of them will help students to be competent Engineers. Steel can be used to carry different types of loads. Steel is very efficient as a tension member; it can also be used to carry compression loads. In this coursework design of tension and compression members will be discussed in chapter two and three respectively. Steel beams that carry primarily flexural loads will be the subject matter of chapter four. In addition, special kind of steel members like beam-columns are also important steel structures, and will be discussed in chapter five. Steel structures require care in designing their connections. There are quite a number of connection types and chapter six will be devoted entirely for it. The other special kind of built up steel members like plate girders and others are also important steel structures, and they will be discussed in chapter Seven. Steel columns are usually supported by plates that in turn transfer the load safely to the foundation. Design for such plates will be treated in chapter eight. Finally design of timber structures will be discussed at the last chapter.
