In general, research is simply the process of arriving at a solution to a problem through the planned and systematic collection, analysis and interpretation of data. It is the most important process for advancing knowledge for promoting progress and to enable man to relate more effectively to his environment to accomplish his purpose and to resolve his conflicts. Although it is not the only way, it is one of the more effective ways of solving scientific problems. The course Research Methods in Irrigation Engineering and Management prepares students to do their own thesis research by helping them to appreciate that all knowledge is “theory-laden” and that “a problem” can be approached from different perspectives. In particular, the course explores the role and the importance of theory in irrigation engineering and management research, and helps the students develop their own thesis research proposal.
The course addresses the following topics: 1) The concept of researches, 2) Types of researches, 3) Process in Research Proposal Development, 4) Research Ethics, 5) Publication & Research appraisal methods. During the course, the students are expected to develop the outline of their own thesis research or Monck proposal.
