This is a course where research methods are treated more thoroughly. It is important to discuss various methods and their suitability in different situations. The main emphasis will be on qualitative research methods, but the candidates will also be introduced to quantitative methods and Mixed- methods. When working with this course the candidates will be close to starting on their own investigation. Therefore help towards developing a problem formulation and finding theory and method for the candidates’ own project will be a central part of this course. This course begins with philosophy of mathematics, give a deeper understanding of the theories for learning and teaching of mathematics, and will discuss what consequences this should have for teaching of mathematics. Through theory and practice, the candidates will develop their own ability to make well-grounded choices when planning teaching which will give pupils good possibilities to learn mathematics. The candidates will further develop their ability to observe situations where learning and teaching of mathematics take place, and be able to analyze such observations.
The mathematical topics in this subject will mainly be number sense, fractions, algebra and number theory. Two different approaches to algebra in school mathematics are addressed in the module: algebra as problem solving and algebra as generalizing patterns.
